Where Can We Go?

Can we help with a few suggestions of places to go and things to do? There's lots of events and activities in the run up to Christmas and through the winter months here in the Peak District, and a few of them are below. Follow the links to find more details.

Alton Towers Theme Park, about 20 minutes drive away, has a 'Wonderful Winter' programme with help from Santa and his elves! Enjoy also Splashlandings, the fabulous indoor waterpark for all ages. A theme park for younger visitors, Gullivers Kingdom at Matlock Bath - again a short drive away - is also a magical place to be at this time of the year, opening on selected dates from late November until Christmas.

Needless to say, a visit to Chatsworth House is not to be missed. There are Christmas markets and beautiful gift shops in the Courtyard at Chatsworth. Gourmet Evenings in one of the lovely Chatsworth dining rooms are taking place throughout November and December. Also inside the house are the famous Christmas displays with wonderful Christmas trees, all with a Russian theme this year. Chatsworth Farm Shop is a wonderful place to visit, selling excellent estate and local produce along with Christmas delicacies.

Haddon Hall at Bakewell, a beautiful medieval manor house, has 'Christmas by Candlelight' events throughout December. Sudbury Hall, a lovely National Trust property close to Ashbourne, has Christmas markets over the next couple of months and in their fascinating National Museum of Childhood there's lots to keep younger visitors happy. During November and December Kedleston Hall, also close to Ashbourne, is holding 'Carols by the Fire' evenings, Christmas Workshops and Edwardian Family Christmas Activities.

Santa steam trains on the Churnet Valley Railway start at the beginning of December and are great fun, with Froghall sation and the staff decked out as in Victorian times. At Treak Cliff Cavern at Castleton, home of the Blue John Mines, there are atmospheric 'Carols by Candlelight' evenings during December.

Nearby Matlock has a Victorian Christmas weekend, with next door Matlock Bath continuing it's tradition of stunning illuminations alongside the River Derwent in the centre of the town. The attractive market town of Ashbourne has a full Christmas programme, including an outdoor Nativity Play, Lantern Processions, late night shopping evenings with a funfair and Town Band concerts. There are also Christmas Story Time sessions at Ashbourne Library. Bakewell too has a programme of events together with 'A Victorian Christmas' in the Old House Museum. There are also Ranger Walks from Bakewell covering a wide area of countryside. And, visit Buxton Opera House for Christmas plays, concerts and the ever popular Pantomime.

The High Peak Hunt Boxing Day Meet traditionally takes place in the market town of Bakewell, which is a good opportunity to get some Boxing Day fresh air and take part in watching a centuries old tradition. Also on Boxing Day there is an annual Raft Race at Matlock Bath on the River Derwent.

A very poplular local event at Mappleton on New Years Day, about 15 minutes away from Butterton Moor and close to Ashbourne, is the Water Race and Bridge Jump for those brave (mad) enough to brave the freezing cold waters of the River Dove - fun if you're watching!

Later in the year during February in Ashbourne is the annual famous Royal Shrovetide Football game - a unique experience to see. The game starts in the centre of Ashbourne on Shrove Tuesday and finishes at The Green Man Hotel late on Ash Wednesday evening.
