Where Can We Go? Can we help with a few suggestions of places to go and things to do? Apart from all the places to walk, cycle, climb and explore there's lots of events and activities taking place all through the year in the Peak District, and a few of them are below. Follow the links to find more details. Chatsworth International Horse Trials take place over 3 days, from 11th to 13th May, and the well known Country Fair is in September . Chatsworth Farm Shop - is well worth a visit too. Winner of Farm Retailer of the Year 2009 and 2011 and Best On-farm Butchery 2009 at the FARMA awards, Chatsworth farm shop offers quality produce fresh from the estate, tenant farms, Derbyshire suppliers and small food producers. * Haddon Hall at Bakewell, the beautiful medieval manor house, has events throughout Spring and Summer, including the Peak District Artisans Spring Showcase Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th March . At Sudbury Hall, a National Trust property close to Ashbourne, there's the fascinating National Museum of Childhood where there's lots to keep younger visitors happy including a woodland adventure park in the grounds of the hall. * The Heights of Abraham, opening 11th February (but check for specific times early Spring), at nearby Matlock is a blend of wonderful underground caverns, exhibitions, shops, play areas, picnic spots, cafes and summit bar all with stunning views in acres of beautiful woodland. The Heights are reached by a spectacular cable car ride above the Derwent valley. A special day will be when the Olympic Torch reaches the Heights on Friday, 29th June. * For a unique experience visit the famous annual Ashbourne Royal Shrovetide Football game. The game starts in the centre of Ashbourne on Shrove Tuesday, 21st February, and finishes at The Green Man Hotel late on Ash Wednesday evening, 22nd February. The traditional game of 'street football' is played with two teams, the 'Up'ards' and 'Down'ards', in a battle to reach goalposts 3 miles apart. The ball is turned up at 2pm. each day from a plinth in Shawcroft car park. Be warned and stand well back!
Antique enthusiasts can discover something for every taste in the Peak District. There are major antiques buying centres in the nearby towns of Buxton, Leek and Ashbourne. For fascinating insights into community history, visit local museums like the Old House Museum at Bakewell and Eyam Museum, which tells the story of the Plague Village in 1665. * For a real taste of the Peak District visit Dovedale Sheepdog Trials in August. It's a wonderful spectacle for visitors and local people alike. * Tissington Well Dressings take place from May 30 to June 2nd. Visitors come from all over the world to see the annual well blessing ceremony on Ascension Day. It's thought that the tradition may go back as far as 1348, when the wells were dressed in thanksgiving for the village's escape from the Black Death, which villagers thought was because of the purity of the it's water. * The High Peak Hunt's point-to-point meeting, take place on Easter Tuesday, 10th April at Flagg Moor. Flagg Races were first held in 1892 and are now the only remaining point-to-point meeting to run the Hunt Members' race over natural hunting country. * Dovedale Fete is on Monday, 4th June in the lovely village of Ilam.
