Things To Do

There are so many things to do and places to go in the Peak District, catering for all ages and interests, that it's almost impossible to list them all.

So, from places as varied as Chatsworth House, Alton Towers Theme Park, Carsington Water with it's outdoor pursuits and Tissington Well Dressing, we'll give you a taste of what's available with some of our favourite things to do.

Historic Houses

Chatsworth House - not only is the family home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire one of the most beautiful and historic houses in Britain, but the children's farm, adventure playground, maze and wonderful gardens make it a place not to miss! And only around 30 minutes away from Butterton Moor House.

Haddon Hall at Bakewell is a totally unspoilt medieval manor house. The film Pride and Prejudice and TV's Jane Eyre were both filmed at Haddon Hall. Bakewell's about 30 minutes drive away.

Hardwick Hall is a beautiful example of Elizabethan England architecture. Bess of Hardwick was the second wealthiest woman in England and second only in importance to the Queen herself. Hardwick Hall is at Chesterfield and about 45 minutes drive away.

Tissington Hall is in the lovely village of Tissington, one of the prettiest and most unspoilt villages in the whole of the country and a 20 minute drive from Butterton Moor House, or within easy cycling distance. Tissington, of course, is also famous for it's Well Dressings.

Out and About

Carsington Water and visitor centre, about half an hour's drive away, is great source of outdoor activities. Sailing, windsurfing, kayak and canoing courses are run throughout the year. There's also fishing, mountain biking and a newly built climbing wall - and great childrens' playgrounds. You can hire cycles here too.

Dovedale, nearby, has spectacular limestone gorge scenery in the section of the River Dove valley between Milldale and Thorpe Cloud. The famous Stepping Stones cross the river and the steep sides are dotted with caves and rock pillars.

Tissington Trail and the High Peak Trail are just 2 of the many beautiful places close by to walk, ride or cycle. Both have cycle hire centres.

The Manifold Valley, just down the road, is another lovely area to walk or cycle in - or indeed to drive through - with a great tea room to help you keep up your stength! The local Manifold Show in August is always worth a visit.

Theme Parks

Alton Towers, a fantastic day out for all the family, is Britain's best theme park and is only a 20 minute drive away. You can experience the thrilling rides, relax in the excellent spa or play a round of golf.

Carriba Creek at the Alton Towers Splash Landings Hotel is a fabulous indoor water park which is open all year round. It's perfect for tiny tots and children of all ages - adults too!

Gullivers Kingdom at Matlock Bath, is a family theme park with lots of fun for children aged 2 - 13. Or you can take a ride on the cable car nearby up to the Heights of Abraham - stunning views and offering cavern and mine tours.

Nearby Towns and Villages

The very attractive market towns of Ashbourne, well known for Gingerbread and the famous Shrovetide Football game, and Bakewell - of Bakewell Pudding fame - are close by and well worth a visit. The ancient town of Buxton famous for it's spa, and Matlock are also nearby.

Some of the loveliest villages in England are in the Peak District and Derbyshire Dales, including Alstonefield, Ilam, Butterton, Milldale, Stanton-in-the-Peak and Tissington. All are surrounded by wonderful walking and cycling country.
