Winter in the Peak District is a magical time when sparkling frosts and snow cover the beautiful countryside - a wonderful times to be in the Peak District National Park. Whether walking, cycling, climbing or just pottering around the picturesque villages and market towns and enjoying the food in the local inns and restaurants, it's a joy to be in this lovely part of the country.

And, when you join us here for a stay in Butterton Moor Cottage or Butterton Moor Loft, you can swim in the beautifully warm indoor pool or have a fun game of snooker. Where Can We Go?

Can we help with a few suggestions of places to go and things to do? Apart from all the places to walk, cycle, climb and explore there's lots of events and activities taking place all through Autumn and Winter in the Peak District, and a few of them are below. Follow the links to find more details.

Chatsworth House has a wonderful programme of events throughout the Autumn and Winter. Behind the Scenes days at Chatsworth give a fascinating insight into the areas not usually open to the public. And, on 5th November the spectacular Bonfire and Fireworks display take place, with lots of additional entertainment. Christmas Markets run throughout November, giving a chance to get ahead with your Christmas shopping and Chatsworth Farm Shop is a well worth a visit too, selling excellent estate and local produce with seasonal delicacies. Preparing the house for Christmas at Chatsworth is just one of the events you can join in and enjoy. From the 3rd to the 18th December there are Nativity Plays held in the afternoons and evenings, starring the Chatsworth donkeys.

Beautiful Hardwick Hall at Chesterfield, has a Winter programmes of events to interest all members of the family. Sudbury Hall, a National Trust property close to Ashbourne, has the fascinating National Museum of Childhood where there's lots to keep younger visitors happy, including a woodland adventure park in the grounds of the hall.

The Heights of Abraham at nearby Matlock, is a blend of wonderful underground caverns, exhibitions, shops, play areas, picnic spots, cafes and summit bar all with stunning views in acres of beautiful autumnal woodland. The Heights are reached by a spectacular cable car ride above the Derwent valley. And of course, Gullivers Kindgom in Matlock Bath is the perfect place for younger visitors with rides designed especially for little ones.

Antique enthusiasts can discover something for every taste in the Peak District this Autumn, with major antiques buying centres in Buxton and the nearby market towns of Leek and Ashbourne.

For fascinating insights into community history, visit local museums like the Old House Museum at Bakewell and Eyam Museum, which tells the story of when plague struck the village of Eyam in 1665, the villagers made the extraordinary sacrifice of isolating themselves in order to prevent the spread of this terrible disease.

For an unforgettable day out try the Churnet Valley Steam Railway, at nearby Froghall, and their invitation to a Victorian Christmas and a ride on the Santa Steam Train. Peak Rail at Matlock also has a programme of events through the Autumn and Winter - you can even join one of their Steam Experience Courses and fulfill that childhood ambition of driving a steam train!

A product of the Industrial Revolution, the Derwent Valley Mills area (between Matlock and Belper) has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The famous Arkwright Mill at Cromford was the world's first successful water powered cotton spinning mill, opening in 1771 and is definitely worth a visit.
